Timeline of our music video narrative

(whilst not specified here; the entirety of the video is intercut with performance shots. As this is mostly achieved in post production, i have not included the performance in this timeline, but have left suitable gaps which will be filled)

0:00 - 'It’s in your eyes, a colour fade out'

We see Robbie sitting alone at a park bench, smoking a cigarette; a VVLS with a slow zoom in. He is rubbing his hands together and looks anxious, staring straight ahead with dead eyes.

0:06 - Looks like a new transition

The zoom continues, and we flash quickly to shots of running and a fight (which we see later in the video).

0:12 - Is starting up and shaking your ground

Close up of hands is cut in; a close up of his eyes and hair blowing around, smoke travelling out of his mouth; he looks vacant. We have a flash of Robbie screaming.

0:17 - Turning your head to see a new day calling

The zoom continues inwards, and we see a flash of Eva, looking beautiful and normal, maybe resting her head on Robbie's shoulders. These little flashes are only glimpses and should remain unclear as to what is happening.

0:23 - Does it feel like a head to lean on?

Cut to a shot of Robbie from the side, on the bench. Focus pull reveals a figure (Eva) standing far in the distance; she is dressed in mostly black and hair is totally covering her face.

0:29 - A snapshot from where you were born

A close up of a slightly scrunched up piece of paper in Robbie's hands. He glances to the left, see's the figure, then glances to the right; see's her again. The flashes of violence continue; we also see him drinking spirit.

0:33 - I’m looking for your hand in the rough

He flicks the cigarette away on to the floor. Close up of it landing, still smoking. We pan up; there is someone next to him at the bench.

0:37 - You’re caught in the wire

Continue slow pan up Eva's back, moves to OTS shot, we see Robbie looking up at her- it is clear he knows her and has seen her before.

0:40 - Well, I’ll lift you out

The pan reaches the back of her head; she is all messy and dirty; though we don't see her from the front.

0:43 - build up begins, 16 bar progression

The pace quickens in the editing; Robbie is seen moving about the streets, looking highly paranoid. He is stumbling about; the grottier looking the better at this point. We get very quick flashes of Eva behind him; in the background of the shots, looking on.

0:53 - 8 bars in (half way)

He pulls out a bottle of spirit and clumsily begins to drink; it spills but he is just slurping it down. He continues to stagger about the streets looking dazed. Smoking too?

BIG IMPORTANT SHOT (A) 1:00

In the few seconds before the chorus drops we see Robbie approach Eva; her back is turned to him. This is the closest we have seen her so far. He turns her around slowly and just before we get a look at her face we cut away.

1:04 - Chorus Drops, 16 bar progression

A frantic chase scene begins; down an alleyway or tunnel; mostly shots of Robbie looking scared and sprinting, looking over his shoulder at the approaching Eva. We don't see her too clearly, she is blurry and the camera is very shaky. He looks petrified.

1:15 8 bars in (half way)

Continuation of chase; flashes of Eva looking normal and happy? With Robbie? Colour grading to show differences? He falls; she gets closer, he scrambles away and continues running. We could maybe have a clever edit which begins with him falling to the floor on the alleyway / cuts to the same shot but him falling, smiling on to a bed or sofa with Eva (difference made clear through colour grading) - then cut back to reality where he gets up and sprints off again.

1:25 - Leading on the action

The pace slows slightly here and we focus more on the performance than the narrative until 1:45. We see a montage of clips which show Robbie staggering around the streets with Eva always being behind him; stalking him. She doesn't move much but is always watching him. The stalking shots will be hard to plan for; we will go out location scouting and inspiration should guide us for effectively creepy shots.
1:28 - Caught in a cell phones' rays

Continuation of above.

1:30 - Bleeding on the sofa

Continuation. BIG IMPORTANT SHOT (B) : Robbie walks past a television shop; something normal is playing on the screens but as he walks past all the screens change to Eva, twitching and pointing at the screen.

1:33 - Staring at the wayside

Continuation. BIG IMPORTANT SHOT (C) : We get the camera really high up (somehow) and shoot Robbie walking past looking panicked. Eva follows a few seconds after he leaves the frame. In post-production we can make it look like security camera footage, and we can make Eva flicker and disappear as she moves past.

1:35 - He’s coming and she knows it

Continuation.

1:38 - Even though she knows why

^

1:40 - Footsteps in the hallway

We see Robbie moving down a tunnel / alleyway, followed by Eva. She gets very close this time and he turns to face her.

1:43 - Girl you haven’t got time

She steps towards him, closer. He stays very still, he see's a weapon on the ground (pipe, piece of wood etc.).

1:45 - You gotta get out

She steps closer again; close up of his hand twitching

1:50 - Go far away

He picks up the pipe quickly and lunges at her.

1:57 - Chorus drops (16 bars)

Just as the beat drops he swings for her head; we see this from over his shoulder. We then cut to what would be over Eva's shoulder to see the follow through of the swing; she has vanished and reappeared behind him. He swings again and she catches the pole with her hand. We see his fear- she punches him and throws him to the ground. She climbs on to him and begins to pummel him ferociously. LA PO-Robbie's-V shot looking up at Eva, who batters him. Potential here for a clever edited shot of Eva over Robbie pummeling him / Eva in the past over Robbie smiling looking down at him.

2:07 - 8 bars

Robbie scrambles away from her; she thrusts her palms forward at him, fingers outstreched - he flies backwards through the air and lands hard on the floor.

2:17 - I can’t hear her breathing

The pace of the video really slows down here. We have a VLS of Robbie hugging his knees, sitting in an alleyway, crying. Close ups of his face and scrumpled paper in his hand.

2:20 - Something doesn’t seem right

He see's Eva sitting next to him in the alleyway, looking normal and happy.

2:23 - Killer in the hallway

He looks the other way and we see the dead Eva next to him.

2:25 - We’re living on a set time

Cut back to LS, now there is neither Eva next to him.

2:27 - We gotta get out

We have a circular track shot around Robbie; multiple locations are seen and edited together. He is screaming and / or crying. This pan is cut in with performance shots of the band so as to break the continuity and make the multiple location idea more applicable.

2:32 - Go far away

The track continues; maybe flashes of running / the park bench / the smoke from the fag

2:37 - We gotta get out

A bottle smashes against a wall, the track continues.

2:43 - Go far away

The rotational track continues around the boy.

2:49 - silence before drop

We cut back to BIG IMPORTANT SHOT (A), Eva being turned around by Robbie- this time we do see her face; hair not obscuring it, for the first time. She opens her eyes; they are CRAZY MAD EYES DONE WITH FUNKY CONTACT LENSES - THIS IS THE CRUCIAL SHOT OF THE WHOLE VIDEO.

2:52 - Chorus drops

We return to the chase scene; it is intercut with flashes of the whole rest of the video in a montage style sequence of madness as she chases him. She is gaining on him and we get full on views of her face from here on out.

3:02 - 8 bars

She corners him at a dead end of an alleyway. They look at each other for a moment; the tension is high. Then, against all audience expectations, they kiss each other. We cut to a VLS on the very last beat of the song; he is alone again.

3:13 - End

Robbie sits alone in the alleyway. A hand appears to help him stand; it's his fellow band members. They smile at him and the video ends with a glimmer of a smile from Robbie.
