Why we don't need a capture list

In previous projects, we have shot any footage on to tape.

This is the first project where we have shot all our footage digitally; and as such when importing it automatically separates the footage in separated clips of each shot or take.

Therefore no capture list or time log is needed; we can just get straight on and edit!

Contacting Warner Music

We sent an email to Pendulum's record lable "Warner Music" in order to request use of their song. Although we don't expect a reply anytime in the near future, we understand that this is an important process to adhear to in this project.

30th Sunday Chase scene

We spent a very long time in the alleyway, getting every possible angle of a short running scene.
What we did well:                  We managed to get many effective shots that we will definitely use in the end product, including handheld shots of the running and close ups of the small fight. One shot even required Eoin to climb on a roof to film what we plan to be a cctv shot.
What went badly:                   Was difficult to keep up the pace when everyone was tired from running up and down the same bit of walkway. It started raining and our time was limited. This helped us however, as it gave us a sense of pressure and stresses of a real shoot.
What we’ll do next time:        We should have had a back up alleyway since we almost could use the one we planned to due to painters. We managed to film around them but next time more preparation will be needed. Our next shoot is our first performance one. We are very excited!

29th Saturday Walthamstow

Filmed Robbie’s first walking shots of him turning Eva around. We got the all important shot of Eva’s eyes and also found the location we are using on our next shoot.

What we did well:                  We managed to get a good range of effective shots and worked to a good schedule. We also spent extra time planning and had a wholly productive day.
What went badly:                   Had difficulty turning Eva during the first reveal, due to framing, spacing and the same problem we foresaw yesterday with the contacts hurting her eyes
What we’ll do next time:        Though we got a lot done we only have it sorted for a short section of the video and need a lot more content on our next shoot.

27th Thursday location scouting

Today we met up and did a lot of planning for future shots. We decided to do the performance shots when we get back to school. We did set dressing and location scouted using Google street view. We also tested with make up and used the white contact lenses which look great.
What we did well:                  Managed to get a lot of planning and set dressing done.
What went badly:                   Contact lenses were difficult to manage and hurt Eva’s eyes. We noticed that our set was quite small and took a lot of time to organise it well.
What we’ll do next time:        We will visit our locations we decided on today and we now know to only put in the lenses when necessary.

26th Wednesday Broomfield

Filmed opening narrative. Smoking in park on bench shots and Eva’s first reveal.
What we did well:                  For a first shoot we got into the swing of things very quickly. We got some beautiful shots of Robbie on the bench, particularly where he leans back. Definitely using them in the final edit.
What went badly:                   We got a lot of people in the background of shots but worked around it. Trying to make Robbie cry through blowing in his eyes didn’t work very well. We might not use the crying shots in the final edit.
What we’ll do next time:        More planning on location. Perhaps a day dedicated to location scouting purely?

Storyboarding for performance sections

We decided as a group that storyboarding for the performance sections of our video was unnecessary- we believe that we should perform the song hundreds of times and simply capture every possible angle we need- so instead we have compiled a large list of every angle we need to shoot.

Timeline of our music video narrative

(whilst not specified here; the entirety of the video is intercut with performance shots. As this is mostly achieved in post production, i have not included the performance in this timeline, but have left suitable gaps which will be filled)

0:00 - 'It’s in your eyes, a colour fade out'

We see Robbie sitting alone at a park bench, smoking a cigarette; a VVLS with a slow zoom in. He is rubbing his hands together and looks anxious, staring straight ahead with dead eyes.

0:06 - Looks like a new transition

The zoom continues, and we flash quickly to shots of running and a fight (which we see later in the video).

0:12 - Is starting up and shaking your ground

Close up of hands is cut in; a close up of his eyes and hair blowing around, smoke travelling out of his mouth; he looks vacant. We have a flash of Robbie screaming.

0:17 - Turning your head to see a new day calling

The zoom continues inwards, and we see a flash of Eva, looking beautiful and normal, maybe resting her head on Robbie's shoulders. These little flashes are only glimpses and should remain unclear as to what is happening.

0:23 - Does it feel like a head to lean on?

Cut to a shot of Robbie from the side, on the bench. Focus pull reveals a figure (Eva) standing far in the distance; she is dressed in mostly black and hair is totally covering her face.

0:29 - A snapshot from where you were born

A close up of a slightly scrunched up piece of paper in Robbie's hands. He glances to the left, see's the figure, then glances to the right; see's her again. The flashes of violence continue; we also see him drinking spirit.

0:33 - I’m looking for your hand in the rough

He flicks the cigarette away on to the floor. Close up of it landing, still smoking. We pan up; there is someone next to him at the bench.

0:37 - You’re caught in the wire

Continue slow pan up Eva's back, moves to OTS shot, we see Robbie looking up at her- it is clear he knows her and has seen her before.

0:40 - Well, I’ll lift you out

The pan reaches the back of her head; she is all messy and dirty; though we don't see her from the front.

0:43 - build up begins, 16 bar progression

The pace quickens in the editing; Robbie is seen moving about the streets, looking highly paranoid. He is stumbling about; the grottier looking the better at this point. We get very quick flashes of Eva behind him; in the background of the shots, looking on.

0:53 - 8 bars in (half way)

He pulls out a bottle of spirit and clumsily begins to drink; it spills but he is just slurping it down. He continues to stagger about the streets looking dazed. Smoking too?

BIG IMPORTANT SHOT (A) 1:00

In the few seconds before the chorus drops we see Robbie approach Eva; her back is turned to him. This is the closest we have seen her so far. He turns her around slowly and just before we get a look at her face we cut away.

1:04 - Chorus Drops, 16 bar progression

A frantic chase scene begins; down an alleyway or tunnel; mostly shots of Robbie looking scared and sprinting, looking over his shoulder at the approaching Eva. We don't see her too clearly, she is blurry and the camera is very shaky. He looks petrified.

1:15 8 bars in (half way)

Continuation of chase; flashes of Eva looking normal and happy? With Robbie? Colour grading to show differences? He falls; she gets closer, he scrambles away and continues running. We could maybe have a clever edit which begins with him falling to the floor on the alleyway / cuts to the same shot but him falling, smiling on to a bed or sofa with Eva (difference made clear through colour grading) - then cut back to reality where he gets up and sprints off again.

1:25 - Leading on the action

The pace slows slightly here and we focus more on the performance than the narrative until 1:45. We see a montage of clips which show Robbie staggering around the streets with Eva always being behind him; stalking him. She doesn't move much but is always watching him. The stalking shots will be hard to plan for; we will go out location scouting and inspiration should guide us for effectively creepy shots.
1:28 - Caught in a cell phones' rays

Continuation of above.

1:30 - Bleeding on the sofa

Continuation. BIG IMPORTANT SHOT (B) : Robbie walks past a television shop; something normal is playing on the screens but as he walks past all the screens change to Eva, twitching and pointing at the screen.

1:33 - Staring at the wayside

Continuation. BIG IMPORTANT SHOT (C) : We get the camera really high up (somehow) and shoot Robbie walking past looking panicked. Eva follows a few seconds after he leaves the frame. In post-production we can make it look like security camera footage, and we can make Eva flicker and disappear as she moves past.

1:35 - He’s coming and she knows it

Continuation.

1:38 - Even though she knows why

^

1:40 - Footsteps in the hallway

We see Robbie moving down a tunnel / alleyway, followed by Eva. She gets very close this time and he turns to face her.

1:43 - Girl you haven’t got time

She steps towards him, closer. He stays very still, he see's a weapon on the ground (pipe, piece of wood etc.).

1:45 - You gotta get out

She steps closer again; close up of his hand twitching

1:50 - Go far away

He picks up the pipe quickly and lunges at her.

1:57 - Chorus drops (16 bars)

Just as the beat drops he swings for her head; we see this from over his shoulder. We then cut to what would be over Eva's shoulder to see the follow through of the swing; she has vanished and reappeared behind him. He swings again and she catches the pole with her hand. We see his fear- she punches him and throws him to the ground. She climbs on to him and begins to pummel him ferociously. LA PO-Robbie's-V shot looking up at Eva, who batters him. Potential here for a clever edited shot of Eva over Robbie pummeling him / Eva in the past over Robbie smiling looking down at him.

2:07 - 8 bars

Robbie scrambles away from her; she thrusts her palms forward at him, fingers outstreched - he flies backwards through the air and lands hard on the floor.

2:17 - I can’t hear her breathing

The pace of the video really slows down here. We have a VLS of Robbie hugging his knees, sitting in an alleyway, crying. Close ups of his face and scrumpled paper in his hand.

2:20 - Something doesn’t seem right

He see's Eva sitting next to him in the alleyway, looking normal and happy.

2:23 - Killer in the hallway

He looks the other way and we see the dead Eva next to him.

2:25 - We’re living on a set time

Cut back to LS, now there is neither Eva next to him.

2:27 - We gotta get out

We have a circular track shot around Robbie; multiple locations are seen and edited together. He is screaming and / or crying. This pan is cut in with performance shots of the band so as to break the continuity and make the multiple location idea more applicable.

2:32 - Go far away

The track continues; maybe flashes of running / the park bench / the smoke from the fag

2:37 - We gotta get out

A bottle smashes against a wall, the track continues.

2:43 - Go far away

The rotational track continues around the boy.

2:49 - silence before drop

We cut back to BIG IMPORTANT SHOT (A), Eva being turned around by Robbie- this time we do see her face; hair not obscuring it, for the first time. She opens her eyes; they are CRAZY MAD EYES DONE WITH FUNKY CONTACT LENSES - THIS IS THE CRUCIAL SHOT OF THE WHOLE VIDEO.

2:52 - Chorus drops

We return to the chase scene; it is intercut with flashes of the whole rest of the video in a montage style sequence of madness as she chases him. She is gaining on him and we get full on views of her face from here on out.

3:02 - 8 bars

She corners him at a dead end of an alleyway. They look at each other for a moment; the tension is high. Then, against all audience expectations, they kiss each other. We cut to a VLS on the very last beat of the song; he is alone again.

3:13 - End

Robbie sits alone in the alleyway. A hand appears to help him stand; it's his fellow band members. They smile at him and the video ends with a glimmer of a smile from Robbie.

Marketing via Web 2.0

Research:

Youtube:

Reasons for using youtube:

Ranks #1 out of all video sharing sites online
35% of youtube users are aged between 18-34 which is a large portion of our primary audience of 15-25 year olds.
The gender ratio is basically even at 49/51
52% of 18-34 year olds share videos often with collegues and friends which means that if we can break through using a hype-generated marketing scheme then viewers sharing the video (word of mouth) will be a large part of our youtube marketing.
As you can see in the picture, there is a chance to advertise the band's upcoming live show via "Playing at->" There is also the option to link to iTunes which we could use to sell our song.
By signing up to vevo we would also be able to post our video onto vevo and youtube, potentially getting the users from both of these sites aware of our band.

(very early) Ideas for band logo and / or album cover

Edited Track Selection

Location

Robbie's Basement, previously used in a Latymer music video:

We would also dress up the basement with sheets spray painted to make it look unique to our band. This also means that we will be able to cover the walls entirely in what we want. It also makes the basement look more grotty which conforms to our idea of wanting to get our band's "history" of being underground for a while before they got their break into the video to show their identity.

Alleyway:

We need to location scout but thought that Camden would be a great place to start. A primary search we did was via google maps and we found this place in Camden. We would want to go and look at it but it seems to have the feel that we are looking for.

UV Lighting Inspiration

This is the video for Black Eyed Peas 'I Gotta Feeling'.

In the video, from about 3 minutes in to the video; the characters get covered in UV paint and dance around. We liked the way they used UV in this video; particularly how it was revealed later on so as to add some progression to the narrative. It allows for a completely different lighting set up and visually is very interesting to look at in contrast to the rest of the video.

We were concerned that our performance was not going to be varied enough or lead anywhere; the UV should be the answer to that problem.

Feedback on initial proposal

Here are some of the issues raised by our peers and teachers after presenting our treatment:

Are we going to do anything with Eoin's hair which is washed out pink at the moment? Could consider re-dying/ making him look quirky?

Is the video/image/band too satanic to appeal to a wider audience?

Could there be a wristband collect from the tours for fans?

Should work to the basement-identity idea: band 'started' from basement rehearsals/ underground gigs so keep that image strong
The narrative is too filmic. We don't need the relationship or accident with the girl being played out. Instead we should only have her as a supernatural stalker. Also, the boy as a 'baddie' should be revised to make him a victim for the audience to sympathise with. The girl should instead be a maverick influence.

Like the idea of a fight with a ghost and also at the fact that the fight is between a girl an a guy. Should really play on the manic nature of the situation.

We shouldn't set the narrative in the street all the time. Instead the girl should just always be where the boy is, e.g. sitting on the end of his bed whilst he is trying to sleep, in a shop window as he passes, on a TV screen...

The girl should be everyone the boy encounters in the street/interacts with in his life. She should always be one step ahead of him. e.g. She could be a druggie under a bridge and then someone leaning against a wall as he runs past.

There should be a repeated section during the chorus where the boy is being chased down an alleyway by the girl. It should be a dead end but we never see what happens when they reach it until the end of the music video where they should get to the end and then turn to each other and he kisses her.

We should put Robbie in the band now that he isn't a bad guy in the narrative.

Possible shooting locations:
Camden
Lea Valley Industrial Estate
Underpasses

We should incorporate some subliminal 'graffiti' of our band logo or a symbol throughout the video.
We shouldn't shoot at night but rather keep it to the day but film in grungy areas and we can mess around in editing with the colour correct/lighting.

Chase Scene Inspiration

This is a clip from Shank. It is a chase scene.

We really liked the pace of the editing and the types of camera angles and shots have been useful. We like the idea of handheld right in front of the guy’s face. A lot of the shots are hand held as well and the panic and confusion this creates would be useful for our concept. One of the first shots is filming the floor and the road markings which is great in showing the fast paced action. There is also a transition between shots that looks like TV static. This was part of the inspiration for the shot that we want that gives the POV of a security camera.

Inspiration for video

This is the video for 'First of the year (Equinox)' by Skrillex, and we found it inspirational to our video for several reasons.

Both the videos contain a supernatural character; and we really liked the way the video had been colour graded with a moody tone; we are planning to use something similar in our finished project.

We also were inspired by the way the video broke the standard conventions of gender representation; the male pedophile ends up being the victim to the little girl; in our video the male character is also the victim in a potentially abusive relationship.

We also see in the video how the eyes of the little girl immediately establish her supernatural powers and can be used very effectively in a narrative sequence. It has extreme shot value and is the easiest way to signify something otherworldly without using special effects.

The Lyrics Of Our Final Song Choice

Pendulum: Witchcraft

It's in your eyes,
a colour fade out,
Looks like a new transition.
The starting up and shaking your ground,
Turning your head to see a new day calling.

Does it feel like a head to lean on?
A snapshot from where you were born.
I'm looking for your hand in the rough,
You're caught in the wire...
Well I'll lift you out.

Leading on the action,
Caught out of cell phones rays.
Bleeding on the sofa,
Staring at the waistline.
He's coming and she knows it,
Even though she knows why.
Footsteps in the hallway,
Girl you haven't got time.

You gotta get out, Go far away.
You gotta get out, Go far away.

Darkness in the bedroom,
Maybe she is resting up?
Maybe she was out late,
Just come back from the club.
I can't hear her breathing,
Something doesn't seem right.
Killer in the hallway,
We're living on a set time.

We gotta get out, Go far away.
We gotta get out, Go far away.

The Storm - Witchcraft Pitch

The Storm - Witchcraft

This is new electronic / drum and bass band 'The Storm'.

They are a band which encapsulate supernatural elements through the way that they dress, their music style and their overall branding.

We have taken inspiration from supernatural
Christian mythology, Satanism and Paganism.

The band will often be portrayed in ceremonial style dress, almost always in dark colours. Throughout the branding references to ritualism will be made; this will be shown through their logo, the sets and stages in which they perform, the way they are dressed- and the image of the band.

They will have tattoos, reminiscient of the band's logo. Lots of the brand will be symbol based; seen all over the album covers and websites. In this respect we took some inspiration from the famous Led Zep symbols.

While heavily supernatural based; we are aware of how easy it is to fall in to the typical death metal image of hardcore satanism- blood and horns and black eyes on stage - this image above is more what we are going for, a sense of enigma and the supernatural without going overboard on the theatrics. The music is still the focus of the band; this is not glam-rock, based on make up and fire.

The band will be famous for their incredible live shows; lights galore and crazy fans being the staple of their many world tours.

The Audience

Here is a mood board which helps encapsulate our target audience. We can see a large mosh pit, a stage at Reading music festival, a guitar, young adults with headphones on, a selection of narcotics and alchohol, some amazing lights at a gig and a glowing pentagram.

Our core target audience is 15 - 25 year old males.

Our secondary target audience is 15 - 25 year old females.

Our remaining audience streches the age range; potentially 5 years younger and up to 20 years older.

Our band appeals strongly to fans of the electronic and drum and bass genre's; predominantly young men. The music is energetic and very loud, frantic; similar to the people who would listen to it. Their brooding, rebellious and overall image of darkness would be appealing to young men. We would do a University exclusive British tour, requiring students of each University to interact with the band (maybe send in designs or covers of the single), which would result in a visit to that University.

The Concept

The video opens with a boy moving about on a road, looking disorientated. He is clutching a scrunched up piece of paper; it clearly holds some importance to him. At 0:45, as the song gets louder, we begin the dual narrative which makes up most of the video. The boy begins to move with more purpose in 'the present', and we see the boy and a girl (his girlfriend) in a somewhat abusive relationship in the past. Colour grading clearly distinguishes between the two times; and the suggestion at this point is that the boy has lost the girlfriend in the present. In the past they fight over some lipstick on the guys collar.

He stumbles into a shop at 1:00, and reemerges with a large bottle of spirit. This is intercut with the boy moving towards his girlfriend in the middle of the road; she is facing away from him with her head down and looks beaten and dirty.

From 1:05 to 1:07, he puts his hand on her shoulder and turns her round; we cut away just before her face is visible.

Just as the drop hits (1:07), he begins to down the spirit / we see him hit her in the past / he begins to jump around like a maniac around the road.

As the verse begins at 1:29, the pace slows down; we see the girl outside smoking a cigarette and the guy goes out to console her. They slightly make up for the fight. The boy in the present sits down in an alleyway somewhere and looks at the piece of paper. He cries into his hands.

At the change at 1:51, we see the boy smoke some drugs, maybe sniff a line of something off of a credit card. He stumbles about in a daze, revelling in his self destruction. In the past we see the relationship intensify again.

At 2:13 when the second chorus drops; the relationship kicks off again, we see a visibly abusive fight with lots of shouting and screaming; the girl tries to leave but he holds her back. Once again this is intercut with him charging about the streets, jumping around wildly, off of buildings- we also begin to see the girlfriend standing with her head down, hair covering face, in the distance. He doesn't notice he is being watched.

At 2:58 we focus on the past relationship for a moment, and we see her throw the girl to the ground. She hits her head on a table and he feels blood coming from her head; he has accidentally killed her. He looks down at her body with utter disbelief and disgust at himself. In the build up to the last drop at 3:22, we return to the shot from 1:05 to 1:07; he approaches the girl and puts his hand on her shoulder to turn her round.

As it drops, we see the girl has some crazy eyes and is covered in blood; she is dead and is haunting him. For the final part of the song the cutting gets even quicker; she chases him down the road and he runs for his life. She looks insane and is all mangled up; he is totally terrified.

At 3:44, when the chorus repeats itself we intercut the chase scene with other moments from the video in a very quick montage. We see him downing the spirit, sniffing the line, dancing about; we also see the relationship- the moment she died and the general fighting. The video ends with her cornering him in a dead end of a road; he clutches the piece of paper to his chest. They face each other; then she charges at him.

We cut to a shot of the paper, revealed to be a photo of him and her together, now splattered with blood, falling to the floor. It ends with his hand crashing down into shot as well; then cut to black.

The Practicalities

When - the days assigned to shooting. Our video needs to take place in two time periods; the present time at night, outside, and the past takes place in the daytime inside. Keeping the daytime shoot indoors (mostly) allows us to control the lighting; and the outside shots are in the dark so should remain consistent.

Where - still undecided, but we have a multitude of locations at our disposal. For the interior scenes we have Robbie's house, Eoin's house, Eva's house and Olivia's house which we could use, it's simply a question of deciding which one would look best. As for the exterior scenes i had some ideas for where it could be shot (below), but again this will not take any kind of permission to arrange, we simply need to go out scouting and see which locations work well. Lighting outside will be our biggest issue. Robbie has agreed to use his basement as the setting for the band performance. This is good because it is a very enclosed space; meaning we can totally control all lighting and set dressing with ease.

A potential location for exterior shooting (Fox Lane, N13)

Who - Robbie and Eva (both group members) have agreed to act in the narrative section of our video. Eoin will be the lead singer and guitarist of our band. We need to find two other band members (drummer and bassist), and i have already begun negotiations with George Michael to be our drummer. This is our potential cast so far:

George Michael (unconfirmed)

Eva Calland-Waller

Eoin Brogan

Robbie Lardi

How - We have many guitars we can use, we have a bass guitar and several drum kits; all of which we can have in our video. The locations are all permission-free, so there is no problems there. Olivia Murphy is on hand for make up and costume design; initial sketches and designs are already in the works.

We have already begun searching for the coloured contact lenses which are crucial to our video. They are priced between ten and twenty pounds a pair, and we have agreed to split the cost. Here are some of our initial selections:
The Blackout lenses

The 'Berzerker' lens
The 'Whiteout' lens

The Brand

We have some initial ideas for the creation of an album and branding possibilities. A very rough logo has been made by Eoin, and the finished product would carry across all areas of the marketing strategy; the logo would appear on the album cover, the website, the facebook page, the twitter account, and would be tattooed on the band members themselves. We also thought it would be cool to have the logo implanted throughout the video as well.

Here is a rough design:

For the logo we took inspiration from Satanic and Pagan symbols.

The marketing campaign would be heavily viral based; the symbol would appear throughout the campaign, hopefully sparking interest from people in a similar way to the 'Lost' marketing campaigns. We would want the audience to think the band was potentially true Satanists with real supernatural influences behind their work- tied in with our Halloween release for the first single and album, we think people will love the mystery behind 'The Storm'.

In public appearances they should appear as shady and withdrawn characters; we would spread rumours and cover the website in signifiers that the band actually involves themselves in ritualistic sacrifices and Satanic worship; stuff like this gets people talking and gets people interested.

We would have lots of Latin throughout our campaign; the name of the album (currently undecided) will probably be in Latin. Latin has strong links to ritualism, the supernatural, and Satanism.
